Known for his imposing presence and distinctive deep voice, Todd became a beloved figure in the horror genre, with his most famous role being that of the eerie and tragic figure Candyman in the 1992 film of the same name.
A Storied Career in Horror
Tony Todd’s career spanned over four decades, and he became a hallmark of horror cinema due to his intense performances and memorable characters. His breakout role came in Candyman, where he portrayed the vengeful spirit of a slain African American man whose legend takes shape through a series of brutal murders. The film, directed by Bernard Rose and based on Clive Barker’s short story, became a cult classic, and Todd’s portrayal of the Candyman character — a chilling and deeply layered villain — solidified his place in horror history.
In addition to Candyman, Todd appeared in a wide array of other horror and thriller projects. He played the ominous Grim Reaper in the Final Destination franchise, becoming a staple of the series and further solidifying his status as one of the genre’s most recognizable faces. His other credits include Night of the Living Dead (1990), The Haunting in Connecticut, The Rock, and Hatchet II, among many others.
Todd died on November 6 at his Los Angeles residence. The cause of his death remains unknown as of now. Todd was best known for playing the killer in Candyman and also appeared in its 2021 sequel. He also appeared in the horror series, Final Destination, as well as the war drama Platoon, among many others.
Todd’s acting credits include over 240 films and a TV career which spanned four decades.
Born on December 4, 1954 in Washington DC, US, Todd dabbled frequently in the television medium while continuously acting for the big screen. Some of his more popular TV credits include titles such as 21 Jump Street, Night Court, MacGyver, Matlock, Jake and the Fatman, Law & Order, The X-Files, NYPD Blue, Beverly Hills 90210, Xena: Warrior Princesss and Murder, She Wrote and Star Trek: The Next Generation among more.
Tony Todd was last seen in the slasher film Stream. He had also shot for Final Destination: Bloodlines, which will release sometime next year.
